Choosing the Right Cylindrical Cell for Your Build

Not all cylindrical cells are built for the same job, and picking the right one matters more than most first-time builders expect. The three sizes you'll see most often — 18650, 21700, and 26650 — differ in capacity, discharge rate, and physical footprint, so the right choice depends on what you're building.

If you're assembling a power tool pack or an e-bike battery that needs to deliver high current quickly, look for cells with a higher continuous discharge rating (measured in amps, like the 20A or 35A ratings you'll see listed). If you're building for capacity and runtime instead — solar storage, backup power, or a project where steady output matters more than bursts of current — a higher mAh rating and LiFePO4 chemistry are usually the better fit for cycle life and thermal stability.

Li-ion vs. LiFePO4: What's the Difference

What Else You'll Need for a Complete Build

Buying cells is only the first step in a battery pack build. Once you've selected the right cells for your voltage and capacity needs, most builds also require a way to join the cells, protect the pack, and insulate the connections:

Joining cells together: Soldering directly onto cell terminals risks overheating the cell, so most builders use a dedicated spot welder to attach nickel strip cleanly and safely, without holding heat on the cell any longer than necessary.

Protecting your pack: Any multi-cell pack needs a battery management system to monitor voltage, balance the cells, and protect against overcharge, over-discharge, and other unsafe conditions. Skipping the BMS is one of the most common — and riskiest — mistakes in DIY battery building.

Insulating the connections: Once your cells are welded and wired, heat shrink and connectors create the waterproof, insulated seal that keeps your pack safe from shorts, corrosion, and vibration damage over time.
