Battery Management Systems

Protect, balance, and monitor your battery pack — in Li-Ion or LiFePO4.

A Battery Management System (BMS) is the circuitry that keeps a DIY battery pack safe: balancing individual cells, and protecting against overcharge, over-discharge, and short circuits. At Mach 1 Lithium, we carry BMS options for both Li-Ion and LiFePO4 packs, in standard balancing-lead versions and Bluetooth-enabled models for real-time monitoring from your phone.

Whether you're building a pack for an e-bike, a solar storage bank, an EV project, or general energy storage, choosing the right BMS means matching it to your battery's chemistry, series (cell) count, and voltage.

Not sure which chemistry your battery is? Li-Ion cells are the standard chemistry in most consumer electronics and power tools. LiFePO4 is more common in solar storage, RVs, and other deep-cycle applications, and is generally regarded as the more thermally stable option. If you're unsure, check your cell or pack's labeling, or reach out to us before ordering.

What a BMS Actually Does

  • Cell balancing — keeps every cell in your pack charging and discharging evenly, so weaker cells don't drag down overall performance
  • Overcharge protection — cuts off charging once cells reach a safe maximum voltage
  • Over-discharge protection — prevents cells from being drained below a safe minimum
  • Short-circuit protection — shuts down the pack if a short is detected
  • Bluetooth monitoring (select models) — real-time voltage, current, and health data from your phone, no guesswork required

FAQ

  1. Do I need a BMS for every battery pack I build?
Yes — a BMS is essential safety circuitry for any multi-cell lithium pack. Building a pack without one risks uneven cell wear, overcharging, and safety hazards.
  2. What's the difference between the Bluetooth and standard versions?
Both provide the same core protection and balancing. The Bluetooth versions add real-time monitoring through a companion phone app via the included dongle.
  3. How do I know which voltage/cell-count configuration I need?
Match the "S" number (series cell count) and voltage rating to your specific pack. If you're not sure, our team can help you confirm before you order.
  4. Can I use a Li-Ion BMS on a LiFePO4 pack, or vice versa?
No — always match the BMS to your battery's actual chemistry. Using the wrong one can result in incorrect voltage cutoffs and unsafe charging behavior.
